Background

Sociology has been established as a prominent discipline in most of the universities of the world and attracts a large number of students. The scope of sociology is widening day by day with the increasing complexity of society, making it a rapidly growing and popular discipline. Sociology covers all facets of society and social life. It deals with the study of the origin and evolution of human society, culture, and social institutions, and uses scientific methods to find empirical answers to complex social questions.

Studying MA in Sociology fosters creativity, innovation, critical thinking, analytic problem-solving, and communication skills. The course enhances the capability of an individual to see the world through the lens of different theoretical perspectives. The 4-semester, 60 credit-hour program aims to enhance students' knowledge, skills, and abilities both extensively and deeply.

Objective

The main objectives of this course are:

  • To impart up-to-date knowledge of the theories and methods of sociology along with training in field-work and secondary data analysis.
  • To provide skilled human resources for Nepal’s development needs.
  • To inculcate in students the spirit of human rights and social justice.
  • To develop professional skills, in both theory and research, at par with international standards.

Duration of the Course and Examinations

The duration of the course is two years with four semesters. University examinations are conducted every six months at the end of each semester. A minimum of 80% class attendance is compulsory.

Admission Criteria

A student holding a Bachelor's Degree in any discipline recognized by Tribhuvan University is eligible for admission. Applicants must appear in the Entrance Examination conducted by TU and obtain the minimum qualifying marks.

Evaluation

Evaluation is based on 40% internal assessment and 60% external assessment.

  • Class attendance – 10 marks
  • Class participation, discussion, and presentation with précis – 10 marks
  • Term paper writing – 10 marks
  • Class test (written) – 10 marks

The 60% external evaluation will be conducted by the Dean’s Office through the final written examination. For practical courses, external evaluation will also include practical examinations in the computer lab.

To make sociology more practical and applied, the program includes seminars, workshops, interactions, and skill development through fieldwork. Internet facilities are also provided to support academic growth and professional development.
